What if you could feel light? That question sparked PERCEPTION, Team IGNITE’s multisensory installation created for Eindhoven’s GLOW 2025 festival. Instead of treating light as something only seen, the project invites visitors into an experience shaped by warmth, sound, touch and space, making light art more inclusive for everyone.

The project originated during a GLOW Academy session, where the team questioned the dominance of vision in light art. Through research and conversations, they explored how light is often experienced indirectly—through heat, atmosphere and sound, and how these qualities could form the basis of an installation accessible to a wider range of visitors, including those with visual impairments.

“Light doesn’t need to be seen to be felt, and connection doesn’t need to be visual to be meaningful.”

PERCEPTION was designed to be approached without instructions, using warmth and sound to subtly guide visitors through the space without prescribing movement. The intention was to encourage a slow, attentive exploration shaped by atmosphere rather than direction. In practice, however, visitors interacted with the installation more directly than expected: many approached the structure closely, touched its surfaces and remained within the warm areas for extended periods of time. What was meant to be a quiet, guided experience became physical and intuitive, revealing how people naturally engage with multisensory environments. Through this shift, PERCEPTION shows how meaning can emerge through experience itself, allowing visitors to shape the work through their presence rather than through predefined control.
